I concur. They have a lower bulk charge requirement and a different float voltage too. It's been so long since I dealt with gel batteries, I forget exactly what the voltages are.
I upgraded my charging system with a inverter/charger from Xantrex - much higher output, and it's a 3 stage charger.
This past weekend I could only get about 20 amp hours worth of power out of the batteries and the voltage was below 12. THey are in very sad condition - basically useless.
