My purpose would be to keep the battery maintained during periods of non use. Not sure what is underkill or overkill - hence my question.
You might also want to consider whether the converter/charger in your rig that normally maintains the battery is even doing it's job properly. Many of us have a ubiquitous WFCO converter that almost everyone (myself included) reports will rarely if ever go into it's rated 14.4 volt bulk charging mode. :M Add to that the fact that many if not most trailers are wired with inadequate gauge wire between the converter/charger output & the battery and it's no wonder batteries die prematurely. To solve this in my own trailer I had considered replacing that awful WFCO with a Progressive Dynamics converter/charger but after considering the pros & cons decided to instead invest in a portable CTEK Multi US 7002 Charger. I've simply turned off the WFCO, no mods to the trailer required at all, and connect the CTEK directly to the battery so cable gauge installed by the trailer manufacturer is a non-issue. Wonder of wonders, this charger does do an honest 14.4 volts and offers an equalization setting as well. There are other higher rated versions such as the CTEK Multi US 25000 and similar models by NOCO but I've found this 7002 works well for my needs. I keep my trailer battery in the workshop over the winter and found the CTEK does a great job maintaining this battery which is now 9 yrs old. Not inexpensive to be sure but you usually get what you pay for. ;)
