BD exhaust question

Here's a pic of what I have http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/images/Product/large/5034.jpg

Notice those 2 brass plugs on the flange? I called BD exhaust when larger of those plugs blew out. They said "no big deal", the port was used for a pyro hook up years ago. No longer needed. Put a new plug in.

I found a brass plug and screwed in tight and then maybe 10 pounds of torque in my 2001 Dodge 5.9

Here's my problem: Sitting on to of the Siskiyou's (in Weed actually) and it blew out again maybe 8,000 miles since last time. Found a new bolt at the only hardware store in town. I know EGT's get pretty hot, what to keep bolt in with?

What do you think would be the way to make sure plug stays in? To hot for lock-tite IMO, few wraps with Teflon, it will just melt? New bolt is steel not brass would that make enough difference? I don't want to over torque and can't find any torque spec on it anyways.

Any help?

Don't know why the Siskiyou's don't like me. Last time over them couple years ago, I lost a coil over plug on our little class C.

But at any rate it's funny now but when this thing let loose coming down one of their 6% grades with our 8,000 pound TT and watching wife grip her door handle with one hand and other hand bracing for impact on the dash with big eyes and yelling HONEY!!! She's still upset.

Actually it did burn a hole in something above and near trans dip stick tube. Snowing right now, will figure out what got burned up in the daylight and no snow. Snug as a bug in RV park right now. Other than asking why neighbor in his new Class A next to us why he keeps running his generator and he's plugged into elec?

Any help would be nice.

  • Op here...

Manufacture called me back today. He says they used brass because

    1. Have less problems getting out compared to steel bolt, if they need to.

    2. When they do get returns many times the owner states that they haven't taken it apart or messed with the entire unit. The soft brass tells a different story because it is so soft they can tell if owner has monkeyed with it or not (I guess wrench marks on the soft brass)

There sending new brass plugs and say torque on big hole is (1/2 inch) 30 psi. Smaller one 18 pounds.

Also said they have had about a dozen in about the last year with same problem. Problem not unheard of but not very common.

I'm going use that "Rocksett High Temp Adhesive" and torque to spec's and score one edge of new plug and check every now and then it hasn't moved.

    Thanks for all the help.
  • Put some type of thread locking compound on it that is good for high temps. Also can you check it with a wrench periodically?
  • Thanks for ideas.

Bolt is coming unscrewed (not stripping out threads). Picked up 2 spares and going to keep eye on them. Have call into manufacture, we'll see if he calls back. A strip on insulation above trans dip stick got burned off about size of silver dollar.
  • Its coming unscrewed vs taking the threads out? As mentioned, looks like BD used safety wire.

I'd buy more than one plug.
  • Use a common iron pipe plug. It will rust and seize itself in.
  • Drill a hole through the plug and safety wire it as they do on aircraft. Looks like there is safety wire in the picture.
