Generator exhaust question

Nice try, but unlike your tires, there IS no "certification" associated with the Genturi. You're the one that claimed it was "designed and engineered to save lives"; yet you can't back that up in any way?

If you've actually looked at it's construction, then you would have to agree that it is quite simple and straightforward. And since there is no legal requirement for someone to direct their generator exhaust up above roof level, the idea that they could be sued if a homemade device to do so didn't work is really outlandish.

Don't misunderstand; I too think the Genturi is a very nice piece of equipment. And you're right; we all make decisions as to where to spend our money; it is entirely your prerogative to purchase one (new or used) rather than make one. But the idea that some type of legal liability is the justification for that purchase is simply BS.

I do get ever so much of a kick when I see people overspending on simple items that can easily be made for 1/4 of the cost. A Genturi is not rocket science; a 90 degree elbow, a 3" pipe, and an air gap. Wow, that's really complex, isn't it? :h

Your right.It appears easy enough to make a homemade version and I have the skills to do so.
The Genturi is a device specifically designed/engineered to save lives. I trust it been tested and verified that it works as designed.
I doubt any of the home made models have any kind of test or certification associated with them.
For the most part I do imagine most of the homemade models work but for 119.00 bucks. I can sleep better knowing I have the real thing.

It's not just my family's safety I'd be gambling with. When I consider a failed Genturi could harm other RV'ers around me, I feel better using the genuine contraption vs. my reduced priced downspout model. I'll save on something else.

I really don't need to see it any more more than I need to see the test that certify my tires capacities.
However if tragedy strikes and I'm properly using a Genturi. I know Camco has lots of liability insurance surrounding their products. I can't say the same for the "Harry Homeowner" Genturi.

If you watch for sales you can buy a brand new genturi for $89.00
If you watch craigslist you can buy one for less than $50.00.
I purchased a $45.00 genuine Genturi, I prefer a bargain priced used unit over a homemade version.
If your watching, they appear ever so often on Craigslist

I didn't even know about the "Gen-turi" until this thread. I just noticed on my inaugural trip that the gen set was annoying outside the unit so I planned on making one for next year.

Don't get me wrong...I do enjoy all this banter about who has more $$$ to spend, it is entertaining. From what I can see online it isn't a hard unit to make and as was already posted, some of us enjoy that sort of thing. Some don't and that is okay too.

If you save even $50 that is lunch somewhere...Just my $.02

I agree, the noisy ones are really objectionable. I once parked next to somebody at a week long event whose generator was both incredibly loud, and spewed noxious fumes. Awful!

BBdawg, I applaud you for any effort at making your portable generator more acceptable to your neighbors. My experience with a lot (not all) neighbors with portable gennys at race tracks, has been that they have the noisiest one available and want to run them 24/7. As another poster pointed out most times they get positioned so that exhaust fumes are the lesser problem after the noise.

My thought and intent is to plant the Gen at the rear of my TT and chain it to my frame. I would then add my (proposed) gen stack to exhaust above my TT roof. No long extension cord required and the stack could be supported using the TT ladder.

I am interpreting the rules from the GoodSams Rally in Syracuse (June 2013) which state "Generator Exhaust Stacks" (or similar wording) are required.
I just about have something that will satisfy that requirement, so I am good to go but I am surprised this is not a topic of concern.
I am anxious to attend the rally to learn a lot of things, including generator usage by others.
