bed platform repair

248RBS Bed Frame Help please

Was loading up at Roaring River State Park and happened to look up in the outside storage and seen the plywood bed bottom has the screws pulling thru it. I know I weigh between 290 and 310 but come on the trailer is exactly two years and 7 days old. Is there a way to fix this? Has anyone done a mod? Appears to be 3/8 inch plywood. Looking for suggestions. I will post pictures If I need to.

  • I do believe I have it repaired. Replace the 3/8 plywood with 5/8. I had to buy two sheets. I took the 3 foot by 24 and cut it to fit the pass thru storage area. Now I have to separate storage areas. More importantly I have another support for the bed platform to rest on. I was up crawling on it screwing 5/8 plywood to the piano hinge. No sag no bowing. Bought those clamps to hang brooms on and moved the broom and swifter to the new wall.

  • Upgrade to at least 1/2" plywood. 5/8" or even 3/4" would be better but it may not stay up as easily when you lift the plywood up to get at the storage space under the bed. May need stronger shock struts or to relocate them a bit.

I've seen 2x3 and 1x2 used on the flat to strengthen the underside of the plywood, or even nothing at all. You could also use some angle iron. Another option is to glue & screw another layer of say 3/8" plywood to the underside of what you have now. Just don't extend it to the perimeter so that it will still close properly.

Some units have the bed platform that hinges up at the head of the bed (against the exterior wall). Our first TT was like this. I strengthened the underside of the platform with 2x3 but had to notch the forward side of the underbed storage space wall. The hinges were barely holding onto the wall as well (just into the luan plywood) and I installed a piano hinge instead.

I haven't seen a TT yet where these things aren't flimsy. I'm surprised ours hasn't collapsed when our dog jumps up when we're both on the bed.
  • If the bed platform is the one you sleep on, 3/8" plywood is too small. I've built a lot of RV bunks and 3/4" plywood is all that I use.
  • No help on the bed, but change the square brackets around "2 have passed" into Parentheses to get rid of the invalid formatting message in your signature.
  • Pictures would help, but I'd say add some extra wood, screws and maybe glue, but would need to see it to say for sure.
  • Replace the 3/8 with something thicker? Reinforce the 3/8 around the screws? Different screws with larger heads/washers?

Maybe a picture would help us better understand your problem.
