Our '03 F-150 with 5.4 and factory tow package is rated for 8000#...agree all F-150's are not the same....check your specific truck either on the sticker likely inside the driver's side door jamb or take the VIN# to a dealer and they can pull up all the info on your truck. Our Rockwood 2604 is GVWR at 6629, so we have a nice cushion.
Have you looked into a hybrid TT?? You're certainly in the right part of the country to enjoy the great weather. You tow a shorter trailer but the bunkends - usually queen sized beds - fold out of the front and rear. Canvas tent. Might be worth a look....you either love 'em or hate 'em. We loved ours. The downside would be if you needed to leave the doggies alone and uncrated they could claw through the tent.
There are a lot of great smaller size trailers out there. If you're thinking new, you might look at the Rockwood Mini Lites. Both our HTT and new TT are Rockwoods and we've been pleased and trouble-free. If thinking used, check for any signs of water leakage....roof, windows, floor stains, even signs of brand new flooring can be a way to conceal damage underneath, soft spots in the flooring.
