Consider where you live and where you might want to camp. If you are going to be going mainly up and down the coast, you can look at rigs near your max tow weight. If you are constantly going east from SD or into the hills, you will be pulling 4000' summits and this gets to be literally a drag!
My advice is to buy the smallest, lightest used trailer you think you will be happy with. For us, it's about camping and being outdoors.
Be patient, find a good deal. Well kept used trailers hold there value once the new price depreciation is gone. In a year or so, if not happy you can sell it for close to what you paid for it.
