Bell washer replacement

Maybe there are some tips out there, maybe I have the only solution. I have a 2007 Antiqua that has many broken bell washers. These are the white plastic washers under the bunks (outside) that the bungees loop over to secure the canvas. I bought all new bell washers from StarCraft and experimented with replacing one and was unhappy with the test. I drilled out the rivet with a 1/8" bit but strangely to me, the hole "wallowed" out to about 3/16". My plan for that one is to epoxy a dowel into that oversized hole then screw the new washer into place. Are there any tricks to making this less painful? StarCraft did not really help. They just said "yep, drill out the old rivets". I've drilled out many pop rivets on other projects but never had this much trouble.
  • I used toggle bolts where I had heavier items to hang, the walls on these are incredibly thin. I don't think the small area of contact of the nutserts would hold very long.
  • Okay, one more nutsert question: the wall of my Antiqua, according to StarCraft is just foam sandwiched between the outer skin and the interior paneling. I want to hang a flat screen TV bracket on the paneling and the StarCraft guy suggested toggle bolts. Do you think nutserts would work for that as well?

    Yes, Filon
  • I just used stainless screws that where short, but fatter than the rivets. I made sure to squirt caulking into the hole before seating the screw to make sure water couldn't seep in.

Thanks for the detailed information. Nutserts look good for many applications.
  • No, they work just like a rivet except the center shaft that you pull with the tool actually screws in and out after complete leaving the nut in place. You have to be pretty careful with the drilling, this Filon is like drilling through eggshells. The nutserts went in easy, I THINK they were #10-24's but I'm not positive.

    Nutsert installation

These are like the type I used, note the rib, they make smooth too.

The tool to insert them is just like a rivet tool.

We use them at work, hence these are "like" what I used, not the exact models. If you wish, I can look to see exactly what size nutserts I used. Will have to wait till tomorrow though.

On Edit: you have to drill out the bell washers a bit too... I used a dab of caulk behind the washer on install.
  • I had not heard of nutserts. Searched to see what they're like. Did you epoxy them in?
  • I drilled even bigger holes and used nutserts and stainless steel button head screws. Scary but worked well.
