crimping or soldering if done correctly is far better than things like scotchlok connectors. A good crimp is better than a poor solder and vice versa.
For crimped connectors done correctly and reliably you need a quality crimper, which the majority of big box store $10 crimpers are NOT.
For soldering, make a good mechanical connection, then solder.
In either case finish with heat shrink with a glue liner to give a water tight seal.
