For soldering, make a good mechanical connection, then solder.
In either case finish with heat shrink with a glue liner to give a water tight seal.
This is what I do - use a butane soldering iron so you don't need
an electrical outlet; Never had a failure.
I recently starting using "Soldergrip" connectors which have the
heat shrink and solder all in one; I have not used them long enough
to give a verdict but they do seem interesting
