Bottom line Sooner, you have to first decide whether you want a half ton or a HD.
If you go HD, go diesel for your high mile, highway use. Not only do you get 2x the power, mileage will be consistently better period and your resale will be heads and tails above a high mile gasser HD in 3 years with 100k miles. You won't be out any money purchase price vs resale price (for the added expense of the diesel option).
If you want best fuel mileage AND a 1/2 ton, get a new baby diesel. If you want the most power in a 1/2 ton, get the biggest or best gasser from your favorite grille logo. 6.2 GM, 3.5 Eco Ford or 5.7 Hemi Dodge.
