Best Muffler for Towing....Toyota Tundra Dual Exhaust????

I am thinking that going back to the stock TRD muffler may be a good move. I will have to buy them since I don't have the originals. I would like to avoid dealer prices.

You can buy nearly new factory take offs from people who have swapped them out. I see them for sale on the forums and craigslist for sale all the time. Take a look on tundratalk.net and tundrasolutions.

I would go to an independent muffler shop (not a Midas, Sear, etc.) and have them replace the mufflers with the same ones they would use if the factory mufflers needed to be replaced. That should provide the same amount of back pressure for the engine to maximize its performance and avoid problems with the exhaust valves and other components.

Beyond that it really does not matter so long as there is a free replacement warranty. If I had to pay 25% more to get a better made muffler with thicker gauge materials I would not hesitate to do so.

With my 4 Toyota trucks the factory mufflers lasted well over 100,000 miles and the replacement mufflers lasted until I sold the trucks and were still in good shape. No need to over think this. Just avoid the chain store muffler shops as most are crooks and the rest are not in business any more.

I went through the same dilemma 2 years ago. I have an '07 Crewmax and wanted to go duals. More for the look than anything else.

I started with a Magnaflow dual set up and it lasted 1 day before it came off. It droned like crazy and the quality was******anyways.

Then I picked up a slightly used factory TRD dual. Much better but still droned a bit. All the exhausts developed a howl around 1400rpm up to 1900rpm range. As you accelerate through each gear it would drone in that range then disappear so it wasn't too bad. Unfortunately, highway speed in 5th and 6th gears stays right in that range so the drone stayed and got annoying. It got almost unbearable when towing. I kept it on for a year before going back to stock again.

I then used the factory muffler and had a Y pipe made up so I could still use the TRD dual tail pipes. Best of both worlds. Stock sound, dual look, and no droning.

Still have the TRD dual in/out muffler sitting in the garage if you want to try it.

I had a louder dual exhaust on my Tundra. I loved it... except when towing. We go to Florida (almost) every winter and its a 2000 mile round trip towing. Last year with a 14 month old daughter the exhaust was too loud. She didn't nap because it was too loud. As soon as I got home,, I took it off and put back the stock exhaust.

If you want to go back to quiet exhaust for towing, check Tundrasolutions for someone trying to get rid of a factory single exhaust. They flow well and are quiet. You can probably find someone willing to pay for yours, whereas you can probably find a takeoff for free.

A straight through muffler design with a large canister will retain good performance and keep the sound down. I like Magnaflow. Pipe out the side as mentioned so the sound does not bounce off the front of the TT.

Well right there is your problem. Save your self some bucks, and just get them turned out AWAY from the front of the trailer. You will be astounded at the difference it will make. The sound is reflected back to the cab off the front of the trailer making it super loud in the truck.

NEVER run pipes out the back if you are going to tow with the truck.

How big of a difference does running them out the side vs the back make? One poster above said that could be an issue. Mine are currently run out the back. That may be some or a lot of the problem, but I don't know.

It is significantly louder when towing. I assumed that was because of running at higher RPMs when cruising (especially when in lower gears) but maybe it is a function of them being run out the back.

Use google search and it will bring up test after test with flowmaster. And even the times that flowmaster did chime in trying to tell people how good there mufflers flowed. They would and could not back it up. Only there full blown race muffler flowed big numbers and that was basically a hollowed out muffler.

Sounds good to some people but it's just junk.

But good brain washing marketing I will give them that.

Do not run magnaflow it's garbage I would post pics on here but I can't for some resone.

I had there cat back on my 06 chevy colorado and 3 years later totally rotted out and starting to burn through. There crappy rockwool packing was all burnt out and did nothing but cause a horrible drone in the truck.

Now I will not every recommend flowmaster mufflers. They may sound good but that's it. They have the worst flow numbers out of any mufflers out there.

If TRD makes a cat back for your truck buy it. It is made by borla and has to be within certain DB levels.

Next would be to check out borlas web site. And if they make a touring system for your truck go with that one.

I lucked out and got a GMPP cat back exhaust for my truck,which is made by borla. And what a differance it is there performace muffler it is very quite with a slight growl to it. No dron in the truck cab and while towing it is still quite inside.

Also because I was able to get the GMPP exhaust through borlas web site I get there million mile warranty. And there whole kit is 300 series stanless steel it will look good for ever.

I speak highly of borla because on my last car I used one of there pro xs mufflers. And 10 years later and 300 thousand km logged on it it still sounded as good as day one and also still looked like new.
