Can't really answer the question without knowing the trailer weight they will be towing. "Small trailer" to some people is 20ft. Others it's a rpod. Cheaper to buy an SUV that gets 15mpg for 35k than an overpriced hybrid for 60. The savings In fuel just isn't there.
