Out of curiosity, have there been any reports of blowouts on LT tires used on trailers? I've seen countless reports of ST tires failing and many people recommending LT tires, but I haven't seen complaints about LT ties.
I'm not taking a side one way or the other, I'm just curious.
There is a current survey going on over on the air forums site ( airstream ) and so far the reporting is that nobody has failed a LT tire on their trailer, and some of these guys have years, and tens of thousands of mile on LT tires.
Numerous reports of failed ST tires, and man do those guys get ticked off when a tire comes apart and tears up $5000 to $8000 worth of aluminum !
Airstream now fits LT tires as standard on one of their models ( the Eddie Bauer model ) and they make LT's available as an option on all their trailers, even the small ones. They also offer retro fit service of these tires to used Airstreams. It appears they are seeing the handwriting on the wall.
It's always amazing to me to see folks reaction when their ox is being gored. Folks will sometimes defend a product, or a brand, or a "type" ( like a ST tire ) in the face of overwhelming evidence and logic to the contrary. I suppose sometimes it makes sense for some folks to defend something. For instance, let's say a person has a financial interest in selling ST tires. They would have a compelling reason to continue to push a product or type of product, and they might full well know there is a weakness, yet not want to give up the financial gain they are deriving from selling it.
A wise consumer certainly needs to do his homework, consider all angles, consider the sources of information he is getting, and then make up his own mind.
Good luck and safe travels to all.
