Jack,
For whatever it's worth, this excerpt was taken from page 43 of the copy I have of the current Good Year engineering data book:
"LT — Light Truck tires for service on Trucks, Buses, Trailers and Multi-Purpose Passenger Vehicles used in normal highway service. "
To me, the way I read that, they are approving the use of their LT tires on trailers. It does not mention any restrictions on any given LT tire of any size in their range. This data book covers all of their brands ( Good Year, Kelly, Dunlop )
Again I am not trying to discredit the tire or ones chosen use of the tire… it’s the tire builders ducking and hiding from that use that concerns me…
I have read tons of literature from GY and on GY, though it’s been some time now I have spoken to them on the phone and by E-mail… also to Maxxis and Carlisle by phone and e-mail, and Continental by e-mail only… I know what they told me and what is available in the US market… I have also searched the catalogs of the aforementioned as well as Toyo and Yokohama…
So other than the Marathon’s from GY what is available for trailers or RV trailers from them … here is a result of a search on the GY website… no boxing anyone in the corner here…
Your Search Criteria: Application: Light Truck: Wheel Position: Trailer Tire Size: LT235/85R16 G (only size available) G614 RST …
There are 1 tire(s) based on your search criteria: G614 RST: Position: Trailer
LT235/85R16 G: 75 SPEED RESTRICTED: MAXIMUM LOAD 3,750 POUNDS: 110 PSI…
Again not a typical TT tire…
Some standard language used by a lot of tire builders like GY…Yokohama version of the same language… “LT Identifies a light truck tire for service on trucks, buses, trailers and multipurpose passenger vehicles for normal highway service and to be used on a five degree tapered bead seat or on a 15 degree bead seat rim. “
But then Toyo version,
“TIRE TYPE: Tires with a “P” are for passenger car use. Some passenger car tires may not have a “P” and are considered hard-metric tires. Some light trucks and SUV’s are equipped with original equipment P-metric or hard-metric tires.
Tires with a “LT” are for light truck or SUV use only. “
Jack,
And that is why I worded it that way ( "for what it's worth" ). I guess in my mind, in the litigious world we live in, I am accepting their inclusion of "trailers" in that general catch all phrase regarding LT tires as tacit approval. Which, when pushed....in litigation is quite possibly the same as outright approval. But now I am way out of depth....I am not a lawyer, don't play one on TV, and don't want to be one.
I just wanna go camping, ( or pull my horse trailers, or my equipment trailer ) and not have to stop at the side of the road and change flat tires !
Ok finally, and probably much to the relief of you all, I am done with this subject. Pretty clear where I vote with my dollars on this whole deal. Best of luck to all you out there....have a safe trip. Maybe I'll see you around the campfire at some campground. I've always got hot coffee brewing, cold beer in the camper fridge, always ready to share and chat.
