So the factory ST tires lasted four, maybe five years, right? They were at the end of their useful life anyway, and in spite of the fact they'd evidently lasted as long as designed under who knows what conditions you convinced this guy to replace them with whatever LT tires he could get his hands on?

Yep, here we have a substantiated case of the trailer tires being at the end of their service life and they should have been replaced prior to the trip. Also, a substantiated case of the trailer tires not causing any issues during their service life. Where is the need for LT tires here? He purchased the rims that were an unnecessary expense to upgrade to LT tires even though the ST tires worked fine until they wore out/aged out in 5 years?
If the guy didn't replace tires before that trip he got what he deserved.
