best truck camper and truck

wanting to get a truck camper with a slide and bathroom, we have a Chevy duramax we would have to sell as need a long bed dually I think as ours is short bed and not dually, husband thinking a dodge diesel ? any ideas appreciated as don't want to make a million mistakes getting the wrong thing and not looking to buy New Just Good to Excellent ! Thanks
  • Unfortunately, all of the posts so far are incorrect. My setup is the best. Very affordable truck, 1996 that does not cost $1200 per month payments plus insurance. My TC definitely did/does not cost $40,000 to $50,000. My truck is not buried with smog devices, and relatively inexpensive to have worked on. However, my rig is not for sale.

My suggestion is to read post on different truck forums to help with your education on trucks. Look at those things you would not like. Each manufacture has their own ideas, be it a truck or TC. Personally, I am a diesel fan, but doubt I would buy a new diesel. In my opinion, they have become to burdened and complicated with smog equipment.

In selecting a TC, from what I have observed there is no best. I suggest you identify the features you want, an identify a couple of brands that has those features. Do a search on RV.NET on those brands. If you ask which is best, I doubt many would not say their own. My belief is that most people will defend what they have, so it would be difficult asking which is best. If you ask specific questions such as why someone thinks they have the best or what do they not like about their TC, the response could have value. I would be more interested in who made the worst TC, who had the Worst customer support. I would also ask why.

  • Hi,

Some dually's are not as good as the new ones.

The GVWR has improved over the years, and now a Dodge truck can carry as much as 6,600 pounds! Yet go a few years older, and they might only carry 4,000 pounds or so. That is a huge difference if your plan is to get a 4,000 pound camper with a slide out and options like air conditioner.

Get a towing guide for the perspective truck, and see what it's cargo rating is. Normally there should be a page for slide in campers.

Here is a towing guide for Fords. http://www.fleet.ford.com/towing-guides/

I did a quick look at the 2014 Ford F-350 DRW, it has a 14,000 GVWR and up to 6,700 pound cargo rating for slide in campers. Reduced of course by passengers and accessories that are installed along with the camper!

You can use that link to get towing guides for 2004 to 2015 Ford trucks and all their cars as well.

    Good luck!

    Fred.
  • Adventurer, Lance and Arctic Fox make short bed campers with slides. Depending on your current truck configuration, you may spend $1000 on suspension and $2000 on wheel upgrades in addition to the tie down system. If your truck is in good shape and you want to keep it, this may be the way to go. If you have doubts about the longevity or reliability of your current truck, then start with a long bed DRW so you have more camper options.
  • Any of the big three trucks will do the trick... but if you are looking at campers a few years old, take measurements of the portion that sits in the truck bed to make sure the camper sits high enough so it clears the truck bed rails. I've heard that the 2015 Chevy/GMC HDs have taller bed sides than previous generation CHevy/GMC HD trucks.

    Me, I prefer the Duramax.
  • Pay no attention to Boatycall. Why with a name like that, how could anyone trust anything he says anyway?

Mine is the best. (See sig line)

BTW, Mine is a dodge short bed single rear wheel with a Lance camper on it. Never buy a Chevy, Dodge is the best.

    Just kidding.

If you ask a dozen truck/camper owners what is best out there, they will tell you theirs is. We have all done our homework, research and due diligence in getting educated. The best thing you can do is sit back and start reading the past threads here and research what your needs are compared to what is out there. Your needs are gonna be different than anyone else's and that means your truck and camper are gonna be different too.

Many people here feel that selecting your camper first, then finding a truck that will handle it is the best way to go. Have fun shopping!!
