Best TV Satellite set-up?

Any suggestions on the best TV, Satellite set up on TC's.

We want to have everything attached to the camper (dish, antenna, etc.).
Is this possible?

Kinda ignorant of this stuff, but am ordering a new NL and wondering what is the best way to have this all set up or in place from the factory.
I don't want any junk stuff that we will have to replace later.
  • Yes, I am Canadian and will be using the TV mostly for winter travel to the US.
First, I guess I am going to have to check out the service providers.

The dome type antennas seem to be what will be best for us. The dilemma will be whether to have
it on the roof (which is preferred), or have it portable?

Thanks for the replies and being that it's a TC, we don't have near the room on the roof that a MH or a 5 er has, hence my reason for posting in the TC forum. Also, not a lot of room in the TC for lugging the antenna around.

Looks like I need to do more researching before I can decide what is best for us and the TC.

This is not true. You cannot get DirecTv HD with a dome, but you can get Dish HD with a dome.

The absolute best quality setup you can get for your roof is the Winegard Trav'ler. With this dish you can get it setup for Dish or DirecTv with HD.

Although, I prefer the tripod and DirecTv Slimline dish so I can get signals through holes in trees much easier.

  • OK, Standard Definition, High Definition, DirecTV, Single Wire Multiplex, Radio Frequency, Infra Red and for completeness Recreational Vehicle and United States :B
  • CA Traveller, if we don't know enough about satellite systems to require posting here, assume we have no idea what all those acronyms mean. ;-)
  • Domes are limited to SD and are great if that is what you want. I installed a RF Mogul dish for DTV with HD and SWM. Push a button to deploy and Wingard has a similar dish.

I believe the Canadian service is Star and I don't know how far south you can get service if you plan on US travel. Perhaps that is a factor for you.

I also upgraded DTV to the HR44 receiver which can record 5 shows. It also supports a mini Genie receiver for remote TVs. I use the same receiver at home. A lot of this is US based and you'll want Canadian based information as well.

My prior HR24 receiver has a RF remote option. The HR44 is RF only. This means that the receiver can be anywhere vs a IR remote. RVs often don't have deep cabinets that are reasonably located for the receiver. Ours is mounted vertically in a closed cabinet which is fine with the RF remote.

Yes.I also wanted a permanent mounted sat system. I had the factory install a Winegard auto dome and we love it. Im not one for parking and then having to walk around hooking up portable sat systems and generators. Some manufacturers offer permanent mounted sat systems as a option. If they cant do it then your dealer should be able to install one.
  • Reading your post above, I see you prefer a hard mounted antenna on the TC. Personally, I prefer a portable antenna. The reason is that when there are trees or structures in the way, I can move the antenna to a clear spot.

I use Dish, with the Winegard Pathway X2 portable antenna. Its completely automatic set up makes it very easy to use. For security, I just use a long chain and padlock to keep it from wandering. On our trip last summer, we were able to received excellent reception from California to Maine.
