Not knowing what length of truck bed and ATV you have this may or may not work. If you only need to gain a few inches, many have used car ramps or similar to raise the front of the ATV in the truck bed.
My ATV will not allow me to close the tailgate by about 3 inches and I just use a ratchet strap on each side of the tailgate to hold it up (about 75 degrees from horizontal) This works fine for my situation but I have a 6.5ft bed.
I would strongly suggest that you NOT extend the hitch.
