Towing with Tailgate down / Hitch Extender

18" is long enough for the hitch ball to be past the end of the tailgate on my ram. Literally no way for the trailer to hit.

How much distance do you need? The 18" link I posted should give you enough leave the tailgate down without a weight reduction and its $130.

I'll have to check, but I believe the shank I have is already at least 12". my tailgate will open and clear the jack, but when I turn it gets close to my propane tanks, and once I had it jacked hard getting into a spot and my tail light was just touching the trailer....but that was an extreme case. The places I would be going to with the RZR are pretty much wide open, not tight campgrounds so maybe ~6" could be the difference...I'll measure my current Reese shank tonight.

You said your Rzr weighs in at 1000 lbs so I am assuming that is a two seater and not the four seater? Not sure if you saw tthe extender pieces. You would need to measure the distance at the shortest angle to know if it would work with your TT setup. But keep in mind this will sit higher than something bed loaded so the contact point will not be the same as bed loaded for most TTs since TTs front has an angle to it. That picture is of a "short bed" SuperDuty... even though the picture is backwards.



But yes, these covers are not on the cheap side but once you see the construction you would understand why they cost what they do. They used to list pricing on their website but not any more. When I optioned one out new with rails on the sides and back with the side adapter bars (to avoid going over the side ;-)) it came to $2600 shipped. I was able to buy a used one locally with all the options I wanted for $1200 so it was a no brainer for me. I am fortunate to have a 8 ft bed on my 1-ton truck so loading my 750 lbs Grizzly 700 and GVWR 9500 lbs TT is no problem for me as I still have plenty of payload left over for an additional ATV. It also provides plenty of storage under the cover and keeps items dry.

I can see price being an issue here as this is not the cheapest option. But the functionality completely out performs the other options with my current equipment.

i'm not sure how much they cost, but with the UTV, that would still leave the machine overhanging the bed, and possibly touching the camper when jacked all the way....

I'm not sure were I said I'm "on the edge of being over payload"? the F250 has just shy of 3k payload without helper springs, 4k with them.

RZR weighs in at 1k, and trailer tounge weight is 600 dry, so say 800-900 fully loaded and I'm still way under payload even before any helper springs.

Not sure if any of you ever looked into a DiamondBack ATV tonneau cover. That cover is load rated for 1600 lbs and also has extenders that can be mounted on it for applications where the bed length isn't long enough. It is a very high quality product. I have no association with the company but just bought an used DiamondBack to hold my Grizzly 700, or two ATVs side mounted, and pull my TT. Another option to consider.
