- wintersunExplorer IIThe OP brought up an often overlooked point. The F-450 was designed to increase towing capacity by using lower gears and some minor suspension modifications. Want more payload one needs to go to the F-550.
In reality this is a moot point as the heaviest campers full loaded are going to weigh 6,000 lbs. or less and all the 1-ton DRW trucks can handle a 9,000 lb. total rear axle load and these campers.
A F-550 comes into play when someone wants to take a truck frame and build up a specialty RV rig that will have more storage space for extended travel for people who have the perceived need to take along every creature comfort when they go glamping. - jimh406Explorer IIIYou can add what you want to F450 or F550s just like F350s. I think air bags ride better, and I like the energy suspension bump stops to make contact with the overloads better. Mine was fine without air bags, but I like it higher in back. Some F450s like mine come with 19.5s already so that helps with sway/handling. But I only have a "little" 9.5 double slide camper.
My F450 has the lighter rear springs of the '08-10 years but did come with 19.5s. - sleepyExplorerI learned a bunch on this thread... camper size... truck size
I have been in Mooneys Host 3 slide... my favorite thing about it is the hinged metal skirts to access everything below the floor behind the trucks bed.
I'd honestly never heard of the forth slide on a TC... not surprised though.
I'm happy that there is just me and Janet... we do very well in our primitive one slide Lance 1161.
And as many of you will learn as you become a septarian (70's I think) your proudest moment will be when you stop along the road and run for the campers bathroom... and you come back out with a smile of relief and proclaim... "I made it!"
I could never get all of those slide out in time.
I'm still nor sure what you are talking about with the trucks... looks like I need to stop and pick up some brochures from the dealers. Then mabe I can follow along.
A last question...
With all of these mega trucks do you still have to add all of that aftermarket******to haul a camper?
Blush, I have to admit I like my air bags.
Thanks for the updates
Sleepy - mkirschNomad IIA couple of years ago, Ford made some changes to their F450 pickup truck including swapping in 16" wheels/tires that brought its payload capacity way way down.
The biggest campers can weigh over 5000lbs these days too. People have posted such mammoth weights on here. A fully decked-out diesel dually with crew cab, 4x4 and all the options can have <5000lb payload remaining to GVWR. - sleepyExplorer

Actually the only question asked was to question everyone else's knowledge , it was more of a statement . It is also a first and only post .
guestioning opinions... there are so many answers that they all can't be correct... some would be called opinions (not lies) - jefe_4x4ExplorerYes, attitude does come through loud and clear on the forum whether we personally know it or not. I'm thinking that will be Joe's (fr8tdog) last post, but I would come to his defense and cut him some slack, as the day he joined, and living a few miles from me in Lake Tahoe, there was a tremendous thunderstorm moving over the Sierra Nevada right over the Lake with large hail and warnings to stay out of the water there were so many lightening strikes. The imminent presence of ozone really screws up your molecules and does a number on your synapses. With this paradigm shift, I believe he was confused and got wind of the atmospheric, meteorological rope-a-dope syndrome, common here in the Sierra where your numbers become jumbled beyond repair until the sun comes out and the usual dry air returns. Just a thought.
I remember this bit I put together in college:
1. We know what we know.
2. We don't know what we don't know.
3. But, we don't know that we don't know what we don't know.
Double talk aside, it still applies.

I've noticed people saying that an f450/550 is needed for the heaviest truck campers?? You guys realize that the f-350 dually has a higher payload right?
Hmmm...... new guy and his first post on weights and no numbers.
Hope he has the proper license. I'll bite.
I noticed that too.
Its the sort of thing a newbie might post.
He's might have looked at a gas powered truck versus a diesel powered truck.
And arrived at an erroneous conclusion. - ticki2Explorer

- jimh406Explorer IIIYep, Chalet has an optional wardrobe slide in the sleeping area. http://www.chaletrv.com/truck-campers/ts116fb#files Click on floor plans.
