The OP brought up an often overlooked point. The F-450 was designed to increase towing capacity by using lower gears and some minor suspension modifications. Want more payload one needs to go to the F-550.
In reality this is a moot point as the heaviest campers full loaded are going to weigh 6,000 lbs. or less and all the 1-ton DRW trucks can handle a 9,000 lb. total rear axle load and these campers.
A F-550 comes into play when someone wants to take a truck frame and build up a specialty RV rig that will have more storage space for extended travel for people who have the perceived need to take along every creature comfort when they go glamping.
