Bike rack on bumper failure

After reading so many posts arguing about the bike racks on the bumpers of TTs, I finally saw a failure today on the side of the road. They had a rack with two bikes on it, the bumper had torn around where it was welded to the frame, the bottom part was still barely attached. I don't know how far they drug the bikes before they realized it. I just saw it as I drove by, it was in the middle of town and looked like they had everything under control...

  • Great..I just last week purchased and mounted a receiver to our rear bumper for our 3 bike rack.

For some reason I can't see your pics but I can see everybody else's. :?

I'm sorry, I guess since I'm newer to RV.net it wouldn't let me attach photos, so I linked them to another post.

    Here's the slideshow from photobucket:

Please let me know if are able to see them there and if you can tell me how to post pictures on this forum. I don't have the "paperclip" icon that I usually look for to attach photos.

    Thanks,

    Nat

  • ...and then there is the, "mount my generator, cans of spare gas, and fire wood to the bumper.".....:E
  • Yep, mine tore like paper. Funny thing is, nobody will say anything while your going down the road.
Replaced ours with heavier wall square tubing and has extra support in the form of a piece of angle iron that runs a short ways under the frame and extends out under the bumper as well. This keeps the bumper from trying to twist downward.

Never mount a bike rack to the rear bumper. They're nothing more than thin sheet metal and the constant flex breaks them quickly, kinda like bending a beer can back and forth.
  • It happens just enough times to make it a questionable approach to hauling bikes.
