I understand completely, and I don't know what, if anything, plagues GM motors. In my case, with 193,000 miles, and otherwise liking the truck, and my diesel guy giving me a 20% break on the price to repair, it made sense to repair. The complexity of the newer Ford motors, and a much higher repair cost, dissuaded me from buying a new(er) truck.
I think the biggest plague was the earlier injectors, but the diesel mechanic who put an injector pump on it a couple years ago told me he has seen a lot of the newer new trucks in for major repairs too.
Nothing is perfect if course. All the big 3 have issues somewhere.
The Allison should go a long ways but other things? 3 weeks ago I put 1 upper ball joint in it and a wheel bearing. 374K and the rest of the entire truck is all original aside from regular stuff like brakes and batteries. I changed 1 glow plug.
I can't see it going a lot more without little things starting to wear out. Exhaust, alternator, starter, U-joints, more front end, shocks etc.
