Just a friendly reminder: Don't push the 5-year rule on replacing your TT tires. We all know that neither mileage nor treadwear gives a true indication as to how much time your tires have left. This tire had a good amount of tread life when I left the campground Saturday morning. 20 miles later, this is what's left.This tire was 9 years old. I was living on borrowed time, but won't make that mistake again. Thankfully, I was able to get off the road quickly and safely, and it was an easy tire change. I was white-knuckled for the 150 miles home, fearful that every bump would lead to another blowout. Made it home safely and am tire shopping tonight. Leaning toward Goodyear (my OEM tires) or Maxxis from Discount Tire Direct as they're $30 cheaper each than the local dealer. Any suggestions as to one over the other?

Go with Maxxis so you can upgrade to a load range E.Bruce

I didn't realize until months later that the damned Marathons are NOW MADE IN CHINA! "Caveat Emptor!" Live and learn. Never assume anything.

How is the quality of your Chinese Marathons? Are Maxxis made in the States?

1) No damage to the trailer/undercarriage/trim.
2) I can't tell what caused the blowout. Tires were properly inflated prior to leaving Gettysburg, and this was only 25-30 miles. I'm thinking it was just age.
3) Replacement was easier than I expected. I have Lynx Levelers, and just backed the trailer up onto 3 blocks of height. I started with 2 blocks, and got the blown tire off, but didn't have enough clearance for the new tire, so we had to add the 3rd block. All told, it was 15-20 minutes. The hardest part was reattaching the spare tire rack to the underside of the A-frame. I keep a torque wrench and sockets in the trailer as I always torque the lug nuts before taking off; this made removing & reattaching the lug nuts a breeze.

No, this was in Carroll County, north of Westminster. I'm between Salisbury & Cambridge, so that would have been a much more convenient location :)

Glad you didn't get into an accident and everyone is okay. Three questions:

1) did the unraveling of the tire cause any damage to the undercarriage or trim?

2) were you able to determine if a puncture caused the blowout, or just the separation of the tread?

3) how long did it take to replace with the spare and how did you do it?

This by chance didnt happen on RT50 below Cambridge did it?

Replaced mine with the Goodyear G26 cargo tire. Much better tire than the Chinese bombs. 3000 miles so far with no problems. Also, pulled a nail out of one and is still good.

9 years is definitely pushing it but glad to hear it wasn't worse. I just bought 16 inch rims and LT tires to replace the ST tires on my TT. Good chunk of change but I don't want to have to worry about the ST tire issue on our upcoming cross country trip.

No, but somehow where they are made is better - last I heard that was Thailand. I had no problem with the Marathons when I had the old trailer, China and all.
