If you need a overnight spot just west of Las Cruces NM there's a nice rest stop that has RV spots on the east bound side. Then in Fort Stockton TX there's a Walmart, when we stopped, there were about 20 rigs there so we felt safe.

Frugal?? With a campsite ranging anywhere from $40 to over $100 every night it gets pretty expensive.

My experience is that BLM land, or any suitable boondocking land, is hard to come by in TX. So much of the land is privately owned.

But, it's a big state, and I haven't been on some of that particular route. I did find some near BB park.
