Brake Lines Blown While Towing with Toyota Tundra!!!!

Yesterday while towing my travel trailer with my wife and 4 month old baby in the truck my brake line blew. I had next to zero braking power. The truck was a 2012 Tundra with 29k miles.

We are lucky to be alive but i am pretty pissed. This happened 6 hours from home. I got the truck towed, then had to get the trailer towed to the nearest campground.

The toyota dealership it was towed to gave me a loaner but its a car. The truck wont be fixed until next week. I am going to have to drive home in the loaner and then drive back here next week to get the trailer and truck and pay for the campground fees while my camper sits here.

To make matters worse, the campground we went to closes for the season before i can come back down here so i had to have the trailer towed to another campground today.

I bought a toyota so that i would have a reliable truck so this sort of thing wouldnt happen. This has cost me a lot of time and money and inconvenience, ruined a trip, and most importantly it endangered my family.

Thoughts on how i should approach this with toyota or am i just screwed but lucky to be alive

Thanks. Matt

  • Sudden failure of a brake line on today's vehicles is very rare. I'd wait to hear from the dealer on exactly what broke and what they are going to do to fix it. Just be glad you kept your wits about you and were able to control the situation without anyone or anything being damaged.

Sorry to hear about this problem. Toyota's don't have a reputation of being a good choice for towing. How heavy is your trailer?

Now you know that all the Tundra owners on this forum are going to jump on that one. All 6-7 of them.
  • What type of trailer brake controller do you have ? Brake pedal switch or MC sensed ? Integrated ?

    Any modifications ?

Vehicles today have good braking components.

The materials should not have cirroided through in two years...even when if the lines were not coated with a protective paint/plating/etc

Please post back when you get the dealers diagnostics and solutions

You are one lucky guy !!!

    ??? :?

Can you please clarify. I have been towing with our 2000 Tundra which we purchased new (Not exceeding it's towing capacity) without any problems. We do maintain and have it serviced on schedule.
  • Be interesting to hear the rest of the story. How do you know the brake lines "blew"? And what exactly does that mean? Blew a hole in the line? Blew out of the slave cylinder? Blew out of the master cylinder?

Anything can have a problem, nothing is perfect. Perhaps you got the one-in-a-million Toyota that has a major problem. It can happen. I'd wait to get the full story before I started ranting too hard. Maybe you'll be at fault and then you'll feel pretty silly.

They don't??? Maybe on RV.net, but that's because half tons are only good for hauling groceries around, right?

Mine has done a fantastic job at towing my trailer for the past 4 years. I tow within my rated means and haven't had even a hint of a problem.
  • Might be cheaper to rent or borrow a truck to get your trailer home rather than let it sit at a campground not being used and enjoyed.
  • I think you should wait until the dealer tells you what is wrong. A long shot but you could have hit something or some other non standard item could have happened.
After the dealer give an accounting of the work needed then you should decide what to do.
Is the truck still under warranty?
