A lot of this depends on where the truck has spent it's life. Arizona, hot, dry low humidity would expect brakes, rotars, lines to be in excellent shape even after 10 years. Rust belt with snow/ice lots of salt on roads = lots of rust lucky to get 2 years out of a set of rotars. We lived in NYS until last year. 74,000 miles on it. Have had five sets of rotars/pads as the pads rust to the rotars due to the great winters we have. Brakes/gas lines rusted and replaced.

I have always used OEM pads in the past but I recently changed the pads on my 05 F250 to Hawk Performance LTS pads and I tell you I was very surprised with the difference. The amount of stopping power with less pedal pressure was amazing.

Same here - 2004 Silverado 2500HD. Replaced brake and fuel lines last year. Rusted. Luckily the brake line busted in the driveway. And right at the ABS block too. Well documented issue with us 2500HD owners of that time frame (2003-2007).

Inspect your brake lines while you're at it. This summer I had a line rupture just in front of the ABS block. Upon inspection I found several places on all the lines with excessive flaky rust. I ended up putting a complete line kit on the truck. For some reason it seems GM used poor quality metal in these brake lines and my truck is not the first I've known of that ruptured a line.

Do you need rotors or just replacing them because?

I recently put EBC green pads on my truck. Spendy but nice pads. Good or better stopping than OE type and waaaay less dust.

Another vote for OEM. I sold my 06 2500 Chevy with 140K and the pads were still well above minimum at the last service from the dealer. I was absolutely amazed at the life. I never got the chance but swore I'd NEVER go with anything else.

I've towed probably 50K miles with our 04 silverado and the factory brake pads are really good pads. and they last, at 130K miles the pads are just over 1/2 worn front and back. My recent experience on vehicles built in the last 10-15 years is that the factory pads have outperformed any aftermarkets I've tried in every case but one. The one being european cars that create huge amounts of black dust. In that case akebono ceramic pads eliminate the dust and provide comparable stopping performance. Not any better but equal performance.

MY opinion on the 2500HD is keep your pads till they need replacement, then go with OEM.

135,000 on the original 03 brakes here. When I was in the GM dealer in AZ last year I asked the service tec if I should think about brakes. He said he worked there 12 years and he doesn't remember putting on a set of brakes because they were worn out. Put a a pad or rotor under warranty because of a warped disc or defective pad a couple of times.

I got 180,000 miles out of my '05 GM factory rear brake pads. At 203,000 miles the fronts are still original. When I change them I'll certainly put the same thing back.
