You might consider a Casita type trailer. They normally weigh less than 3,000#. It would not sleep all of your family but you could put the kids in a tent outside if they are old enough while still having the conveniences of a full sized trailer.
Saw a family do exactly that while camping the past couple of weeks. They seemed happy with it.
We love having a full sized travel trailer because of the queen bed, big fridge and freezer, oven and nice bathroom, but honestly, we don't spend that much time inside when we are camping. I take a canopy to put over the picnic table and we spend most of our time either walking, sitting under the awning or under the canopy playing board and card games.
