This is a myth propagated via 'net.
They ARE designed to take 12V without harm, period.
The are designed to operate a long time with 12V applied.
No one has presented evidence of a melted or burned up electromagnet due to prolonged ELECTRICAL operation but the myth continues.
Check em if it makes you feel better but chances are NOTHING will be wrong with them...
