Broke my TV torque wrench

Well it finally had enough turns I guess after about 15 years. Not sure what brand it was, no markings, but it didn't say China anywhere :B Tiny little screws came came out and lost. There's no fixing it.

I should probably know better than asking what brand to buy :W but what do you gear heads use? While I'm on the subject how about Infrared temperature readers ? Man the prices for them vary greatly.
Thanks
Rick

  • My adjustable Snap-on was new 43 years ago. Had it checked by the local Snap-on salesman and it's still accurate.

  • Thanks for the opinions guys.
I did have my eye on the Snap-on and Craftsman wrenches from the get go since most of my tools are of this brand, although getting old but still working.
Yes the Craftsman is indeed not what it use to be, but I just got a new set of half inch socktets off eBay a few weeks ago that were advertised as made in the USA. They are stamped as so also, but who really knows where they are made now days.
Calibration?? Who does that? Just looking at the guts of my old one I can't see how that is possible. I suppose they make some really high end models for engineering purposes for spec work, but not what everyday Joe would buy.
Thanks again guys for the responses.
  • We had a few calibrated at work. The 1200 LB was pricey but as I remember the small ones were less then $50.00.
  • I have two...a bending beam...which I carry in my vehicle and a clicker. Both are Canadian Tire...which doesn't help much...considering you are in the USA.

    Some considerations though:

I would look at a Torque Wrench that has a long warranty.

I know that it's a good idea to get them calibrated...although I never have done so with my clicker.

One guy I know...get's a new torque wrench every couple of years....thinking that the calibration should be at least good for a couple of years. Don't know how much a calibration costs.

I've always wanted to get a Snap On...but I don't use a Torque Wrench enough to justify the cost. If I could justify the cost...that would be my choice.
  • when I left sears they were no longer warranted for life. best you will get is one year. Since K mart took over every thing has gone down hill. esp the extended warranties. Point of interest, I have a warranty on my BBQ. used to be able just to call in and get parts for it. Now if one part is over $50 you have to have the repair man come out. just so happens all the parts are over $50 now.

Craftsman has really gone down hill lately. I was in Sears a couple months back and I'd say at least 50% of their Craftsman tools were made in China.
  • I have been using a Kobalt from Lowes. Paid about $100 for it on sale several years ago and it has held up well.

For a good torque wrench that will hold its accuracy these days, I imagine they will start at around $200.

Sorry, no help on infrared readers.
  • Mine just kinda stripped out last year. I bought one from ACE HW with a lifetime warranty. It's good enough for lug nut duty.
