Advancing timing at low rpms can do bad things because it causes excess cylinder pressure. Advance timing at high rpm better for the engine. It took many years and many popped head gaskets for the tuners to figure this out back in the early days diesel tuning.
A diesels power is regulated by fuel so in order to add big power then more fuel is needed. Air intake/exhaust mods only get you so far and you will hit a brick wall in terms of power if more fuel is not added. Just like you could not get the power out of your truck that you did without altering fuel delivery in some way.
