bug spray

The DW and I returned from getting more fire wood to find what we thought was a roacj crawling on the outside to the right of the door of out TT! well I slammed it with my shoe and it hit the ground then it appeared to flight away.... I immediatly bough home defense spray and soaked the outside of the TT and around all entrance points including where the storage doors are and every place the TT meets the ground.

We now do this on every trip, anyone else do this?

  • I look for ants when I stop for the night. If I see any I spray around all tires and cord, hose, etc.
    Never a problem inside ever.
  • I have my TT sprayed along with my house by a professional pest control company and I have no issues with bugs. In Florida bugs are an ever present threat in the home and RV and prevention is key.

We do have plenty of crawling critters down here for sure! ;)
But, in over 5 years of owning RV's, we have NEVER had a cockroach, palmetto bug, or whatever other name they go by in the rigs or the storage compartments. More issues with campsite ants and mud daubers than with the cucharachas........ Oh, and there's some variety of spider down here that has a real affinity for the LP compartment; wish I knew why.

Word of caution on the spray pesticides though. I would stay away from any petroleum based stuff, particularly those aerosol long range wasp killers. I engaged in chemical warfare with an occupied mud dauber nest on a slide topper last year with one. Despite a good aim, some of the spray hit the EPDM membrane, and instantly blistered it off the deck.
  • thats what I do now as I used to tent camp until my back surgery and when we tent camped I would rake the sight and then soak it with home defense, let dry and soak again before putting the tarp down then the tent and then spray the inside and let dry while we set up the rest of the sight. it stands to reason I thought, why woudnt I still do it with my RV as there is all kinds of creepy crawlers and some people who bring them with! nothing like roaches and spiders to ruin your vacation.

You can start by buying a product called Sevin Powder. Sprinkle around ALL the tires and around ALL the hoses, water, electric anything that touches the ground and that touches your RV. Don't lean anything up against the RV AND don't put storage tubs outside your RV. There are holes under the handles and the critters crawl inside your storage tubs and then you bring them right into your RV when you leave.

I finally switched to Ortho Home Defense Max. Comes in a real neat container with a battery operated spray wand I now spray this around the ENTIRE MH after I park it. This has completely stopped any bug evasion.
  • I know that I'll be sorry I'm saying this, but SO FAR we've never had any buggies in either the ROO or now in Rocky.....except for those blasted mosquitoes. We may be lucky because the Rockyport is an elevated area about 3' higher than the backyard and is all gravel. For whatever reason, I'm plenty happy about it. If we were prone to have these visitors very often, I think I'd just routinely set off a fogger - maybe once a month. Here in the south, pest control service is almost a requirement. Our guy sprays both inside and outside every 3 months and returns if needed sooner, but we rarely have to call him back. Fingers crossed.

I just had to bug bomb our TT because of a spider explosion. I don't know if it's possible to totally keep the creepy crawlys from coming in.

Go to Home Depot and pick up some Hot Shot Spider Killer. Spray around inside corners and other places spiders might like. Repeat every 2-3 months and it seems to keep them at bay pretty well.
  • I spray inside out house several times a year....why wouldn't I do the same in our RV. Usually, a quick spray of around the doors is enough, because we seldom open the windows.....plus, they have screens.
We try to use as little insecticides as possible, because of the dogs and out grandson....but, DW hates roaches, so we do what we can!:)
  • We fouond a few ants inside once and assumed if there were a few we saw there were a lot more we did not see. So far the only time we have seen anything we have had to spray for.
