Build a truck

Greetings all,

Those of you who have ordered a truck built to your specs from the factory, how did that go? And did you pay full msrp or is their a price process just like a vehicle on a dealer lot?

Any input is appreciated as I have no clue how it works.

  • As with any mass-produced item you cannot get a custom-built truck---- okay let's start with that

you can get certain packages together and such but They only sell what they offer

In other words if Ford doesn't offer a grey and pink truck combination ----you can't get one !!!. Now you could have it custom painted after you buy it ,but you can only buy what they offer..... Make sense.??????

For instance if you buy the rubber floor mats then you're going to get the vinyl seat---You used to be able to get, you know just individual things........ but like nowadays you would not be able to get power locks without power windows ---or power windows without..power locks .

there are some packages that go together so you're not really custom ordering anything
  • I special ordered both of the trucks I bought and my father and brother both ordered vehicles while they were alive. We all had good experiences and felt that we got good prices. My father would send out written requests for quote with exactly what he wanted and the date when he planned to confirm the order. I wanted to stick closer to home so I went the local dealer's sales manager, told him that I wanted to order a truck and I wanted to know how much markup he wanted after invoice and factory incentives and that if his markup was reasonable I would not bother shopping around. He said that he would do it for $80. I know that he gets some year end kickbacks so he actually made more money than that but it made negotiations on what to get much more pleasant. My father and brother both got about $200 under invoice but had to drive farther and negotions were not as pleasant.

My dealer did promise me that I would not lose any discounts in effect at the time of order plus I would get any new discounts that were in effect at time of delivery. During the build time some expired but were replaced by new ones with different names. I got them all. Plus, I got exactly what I wanted, I know that it had not been out on the lot for several months or been abused by test drivers seeing how power it had. The only problem I had was that my recent purchase was shortly after the new body style came out and I apparently specified something that they were having production issues with. That delayed the truck several weeks more than what I was promised. I got about twice as much for my old truck by selling it myself as the dealer offered in trade so that was good too.

Just spend a while on the site doing research so that you are sure what you want and keep it simple for the dealer. Service costs money so they can't give you both best price and exceptional service. If you want low price help them to keep it low. I expect to buy all of my trucks that way. One thing it does is let all of the dealers that you talk to know that the are competing on the exact same truck and their main tool is price so they had better get serious. Most of their pressure tactics are foiled on a special order.

If you are thinking of buying a Ford you should look into joining AQHA, it could save you several hundred dollars.
  • Okay I discovered that the 11.5 comes as part of a package, go figure. Mind boggling, this process! :)
  • Thanks. What I hoped to hear as far as price. But poking around the Ford build it website, and finding it a bit annoying. It seems like I can't get exactly what I want because if I want something in particular, I have to have certain other things with it. For example, there is no option with the F350 to get the 11,500 gvwr package, only the 10K package. (according to the website) If I want two tone paint, I can only get certain color combos by default. And on and on... Am I missing something here? Like I said, new to custom building so every lit bit of info helps.
    Thanks

Expecting delivery of our new, custom built, F-150 in about 3 to 4 weeks. The website estimates delivery date to dealer as 6/7/17. Dealer says we will get whatever incentives that Ford has then. We negotiated down to a price we were happy with and the incentives will come off of that.
  • Ordered the last two...negotiated the price until we got the bottom line we were happy with......then waited about 8 weeks for delivery.

No one pays MSRP no matter where the vehicle comes from unless you are a fish waiting to be skinned.
