Good replies thus far. So ur asking of a tuner, yes first I would go for 4:10 gear if cheap enough. Second if you want a generic hand held tuner, then no. Go to Blackbear performance and go efi live tune. This is the best out there in my opinion only. It's easy, and yes you will require 91 when under the tow mode tune. I have 3 settings on mine. 87,89, and 91. Stock with 87 obviously, 89 is much better and 91 gives full Hp and Tq available for towing. All are done within safe perimeters and you will notice much less lag. I run the 89 tune all the time. No I don't race, don't care to. It gives the truck a much lighter on its feet feel with very little Tq management. The transmission shifts much better then stock, and my mpgs have increased 1-2 city, hwy I get 18 at 70 mph. I have only used the 91 tune once when towing. Yes there is a difference in stock verse full 91 tune. Tugging 10k of fifth wheel is pretty easy with the 91 tune. I like the tune and to me 600.00 was well spent. Can I afford a diesel? Yes. Do I want one? No. Have I pulled with one? Several. Why do I stay with gas? Lots of personal reasons. Do I like diesel power? Yes. Don't want all the extra issues anymore. Will this tuner give u diesel performance? No. Will it make you truck performance better? Yes! Will it wake up that engine? Yes.... So I would look into gearing first, then go online to Blackbear performance.com and search it out. It's an simple process and if your staying with your current truck for some time, it's worth it. You also can program the truck back to stock within seconds.
I've received lots of helpful info and there's a lot here as well. I've got the guy searching for parts now and hopefully he won't have to replace the carrier. That will save me $600 that could be spent on that Black Bear programmer. I want something that I can adjust as needed. I don't race anymore but I like to play every once in awhile when I'm not towing.
I have no intentions of getting rid of this truck. It's a black short bed with an Undercover on it, it looks good, runs good and I know all the parts that has gone into it. I just new heavier front brake pads, rotors and rear shoes 2 weeks ago. Newer engine, tires, wheels and suspension parts too so I'd be a fool to get rid of it.
The only thing that's really wrong right now is after moving to the gulf coast, rust has begun on my rear fender wells. I'll get it repaired as soon as I get off the coast. Thanks for the input.
