Bully Dog or other brand diesel engine monitor

I recently bought my first diesel truck. A 2013 GMC 3500 ......I am wondering if I need to know the information that a monitor will give me. Isn't the gages on the truck enough information to safely...

I like my Scangauge II. Its simple and inexpensive. I monitor oil temp, coolant temp, FICM voltage and tranny temp. Can scan for codes and reset if needed. Can also monitor fuel. For the price I don't think it can be beat.
