Bully Dog or other brand diesel engine monitor

I recently bought my first diesel truck. A 2013 GMC 3500 ......I am wondering if I need to know the information that a monitor will give me. Isn't the gages on the truck enough information to safely...

I have a scan gage but when i checked the scan gage web site it shows a different one for diesel so I do not know if the readings would be accurate on the one I had on my gas engine.
