Bumper Mounted Storage Box

Does anyone have pictures of a bumper mounted storage box that they have either built or had built for their TT or 5vr? I want to add a diamond plate storage box mounted to the framing that supports my rear bumper to carry my two Honda eu2000 generators & other outdoor items.

Just be very much aware that most trailer bumpers are very thin metal and not designed to support anything - mainly for looks I think... I would also be very weary of leaving my high dollar generator unattended under any circumstances unless they are out-of-sight. They will walk away on you no matter how secure you think they are mounted in the open on the back of your RV trailer....

I would think something to support 400 lbs are so would most definitely require tieing into the trailer main frame for support.

Even simply spare tire holders are sometimes too much for the trailer bumpers...

I found alot of images on google search by looking for 'RV trailer rear storage racks'

  • Even tying into the trailer frame may not be a good idea. Many lightweight frames are lucky to even support an empty trailer. Ask me how I know.
  • If you do this project, be very carefull of the weight. Get the trailer too light on the tongue, and you'll have sway issues.
  • Also if you do storage in the back, have it welded underneath as most mentioned the bumper is not the best place to mount a rack in the back. There are some trailer models with a fold down storage tray, if you can see how they were mounted and use that as a patter.
  • Even IF you could mount it securely and safely, that much extra weight (2 generators) cantilevered that far back will significantly change the handling of your trailer....
  • I had a hitch put on the frame and use a hitch haul with a truck box mounted to it. My tounge weight is around 1400 lbs so no problems. You need to keep your tounge weight min 12% to 15%.
  • Here's how I did mine.

Note that I removed the bumper and attached directly to the frame, you need to be sure your frame will support that stress. My tongue weight was also fairly heavy at about 14% so I had some room to play in the weight/balance dept. Too much weight too far back can create severe handling issues unless you have a Hensley or ProPride hitch.
  • I found exactly what I was looking for. I am going to use this as a guide to make mine. Very well done by BurbMan! See link below if interested.

  • Thanks mackyb but I can't take credit for the design, I followed a similar mod made by forum member and camping buddy jbarca.
  • Assuming that the trailer frame will handle the weight that far back and the extra weight won't negatively affect the way the trailer handles, I would weld a couple of 1/4" plates onto two pieces of seemless receiver hitch tubing (2" ID) so that the assembly can be bolted onto the frame on each side. Then, a 2" square tube assembly can be inserted into the receiver tubes so that it could be easily removed. I would also offset the bumper assembly so that you don't reduce your overhang clearance.

    Example of offset bumper tubes.
