Burb 2500 (2008-2013)

Good afternoon!

I believe I have settled on my TV/TT combo and will likely purchase in 3-6 months (ok, I may change my mind a few hundred times during that time, but this seems like the ideal combo). I am going with a 2009-2013 Suburban 2500. I am excluding the 2007 because I would like the 6L90E versus the 4L80E, and I'm on the fence with the 2008 as they were not yet equipped with the integrated brake controller.

I'm looking for some sanity check on my calculations, and a few questions about essential purchases as I get going. I know nothing is as good as having the vehicles and weighing them at the scales, but for planning purposes, this will have to suffice.

2009-2013 Suburban 2500:
GCWR - 16,000
GVWR - 8,600
Estimated Payload - 2,162 (depending on options)
Hard Tongue Weight Limit - 1,000 (due to integrated receiver)
People & Pets - 910 (family of 7, one small guest, 1 large dog, 2 small dogs)
Hitch - 150 (plan to purchase a Propride 3P since everything will be close)
Cargo in the TV - 100
Estimated Loaded TV weight - 7598

2016 Aerolite 282BHS
UVW - 6293
Fresh Water and Propane - 552 (FW - 52*8.5, PP 55*2)
Estimated Cargo - 500
Estimated Loaded Vehicle Weight - 7345

GCWR - 16,000 - 7,598 - 7,345 = 1,057 capacity
TW @ 13.5% of 7,345 = 992
TV Payload = 2162 - 1160 - 992 = 10 (could tow at lower TW still)
TV GVWR = 8600 - 7598 - 992 = 10 capacity
TT GVWR = 7600 - 7345 = 255 capacity

and a few questions about getting started:

1) Are the standard gauges adequate or should I invest in a Scangauge II or Edge Insight? I really like the look of the Edge Insight CTS2 even though it costs a bit more.

2) Towing mirrors - any brands to avoid, any favorites?

3) Anyone have experience with these Burbs that can comment on the adequacy of the stock sway bars? Worth an upgrade?

I'm thinking I'll do the above and a autocal from blackbear to start, and then will do some more upgrades just for fun later.

I'm open to all suggestions and truly appreciate all of the help from the expertise in this forum so far.

Edit: didn't have TW added into LVWR of TV.

Depending on trim level it could have air ride or not. Personally I think your being pessimestic on your numbers. The Suburban could likely weigh 6500 pounds long before you add fuel, passangers or stuff for traveling. Hitch weight will be aroumd 12-15% of trailers scaled weight. Dont have that? Use 12% of the trailers GVWR.
Equalizer bars and sway control? You bet. Unless you opt for a hitch like the Hensley Arrow that offers built in sway control.
Intrigrated brake controller? Just done see that as that big of a deal to me. I like my Prodigy just fine.

I have the curb weight at 6,438 (without passengers or cargo). Supposedly the GM curb weight includes a full tank of gas, but again, I will not be able to know for sure until I get the vehicle. I plan to purchase the 3P, which is similar to the Hensley Arrow (both developed by Jim Hensley). I should still have room to play in both the TV GVWR and the payload if I drop down in tongue weight, which is supposedly easy with the 3P. Thoughts?

Thank you all for the input.
  • FYI my 04 K2500 weighs 6800lbs with passengers (3)

When camping 8400 pounds when loaded to camp, 4400 on the trailer axles.

    2) Towing mirrors - any brands to avoid, any favorites? No favorites. Any that will fit, will work. The cheaper the better. Save the money for fuel and campground fees.

    3) Anyone have experience with these Burbs that can comment on the adequacy of the stock sway bars? Worth an upgrade? I have owned a BURB and a couple of Excursions with sway bars. I have towed many miles with and without sway bars and have found them to be useless.
