When a battery takes a sudden dump like that it's often because one of the lead plates has finally eroded to the point where it breaks free and causes an open circuit. Unless you have X-ray vision, there is no way to predict exactly when it is going to happen.
That 36 months is a 36 month WARRANTY. It does not mean the battery is any more or less likely to fail after 36 months than any other battery in the same conditions. It just means that when it does fail, you get to buy a new battery at full price instead of getting the $2.36 prorated reimbursement under warranty.
Just like milk doesn't go bad the instant it hits the "best if used by" date. Or bread.
