The Ford spokeswoman was asked why the protectors were on the crew cab but not other versions, she said, “It’s something that we do regularly. It’s to optimize the structure. All of that is to meet regulatory requirements and achieve public domain ratings.”
Basically Ford is gaming the system by improving only the tracking vehicle they knew would be used to set the safety ratings. And she said it's "something we do regularly" - so that means more of the same across the Ford fleet.
