Seems like if the point were to keep the weight down, and the fuel economy up, they'd have left it off the heavy, high volume crew cab, and installed it on the lighter, lower volume Super and Regular cab, where they could afford the extra weight.
Ford clearly had a good solution to make the F150 safer. It just looks like the beancounters won, and they left it off the trucks that weren't likely to be crash-tested, to save a few dollars. That's pretty disappointing from a safety and ethics standpoint. But to be fair, far from unique in the auto industry.
