There's two Chevy trucks of that era in my driveway. One is a 2008, the other is a 2009. Both have been trouble free since new.
Consider yourself lucky or you drive a lot of highway miles and very little driving around town. A lot of these trucks would fill the crankcase with diesel from the regen process and is the main reason why GM switched to the 9th injector to address this problem.
I would still avoid one like the plague.
The problem with the DPF model diesels that did not have DEF is that they had to control NOx emissions by lowering exhaust temperatures. This resulted in higher particulate residue being trapped in the DPF which then fired off more regeneration/burn cycles. It was a very inefficient way of dealing with emissions which resulted in poor mileage and frequent DPF clogging.
