You should be looking at 3500 series vans for sure with all the people weight you'll be putting inside. Keep in mind that the tow rating of a van is likely for an empty van. You must subtract the weight of your family from the tow rating.
You want the biggest engine you can get if you expect this rig to go up hills. In a Chevy that's the 6.0 gas or the Duramax diesel. I wouldn't get the diesel because a 6 mile commute will kill it.
If a Ford you want the V10. The fuel mileage will not be that much worse than a V8 but he power will be much better. No one going up hill at 35 mph with the engine overheating talks about all the fuel their saving by having the smaller engine.
