Keep in mind that even if a particular failure happens to "a lot" of people, it is still only happening to a small minority of vehicles. The vast majority of vehicles will go on to lead long relatively trouble-free lives.
I had a 2003 Silverado 1500 which had the exact same cooling system and drove it for 218,000 miles with zero radiator issues. It went through two water pumps, and the power steering cooler rotted out, but the main radiator was as solid as the day it was new when I traded it off, and the transmission was original and still functioning perfectly.
