seems like a lot of receiver for my truck. My ball is only rated 1000 lbs.
But looking at the GM receiver and its design has me worried...
The choice is between having just enough capacity or more than enough. Take a good long look at the OEM receiver and the wimpy welds and brackets that attach it to the cross tube. There's not a lot of meat there is it?
Sure, the XD has significantly more capacity than your current need, but the huge benefit is all weight carrying and weight distribution forces go directly from the receiver to the frame.
You'd had to search some REALLY old posts, but many years ago we had several long discussions on this forum about the OEM GM receiver. There were a few members that reported their receivers bent or broke completely. One member was towing his TT and in the middle of an intersection had to jam the brakes to avoid a collision. The side forces that created ripped the receiver right off the cross tube.
Most of those were heavy tongue weight but within the rated limits of the receiver. The takeaway is that even though the receiver was supposedly rated for those amounts the design couldn't handle it under worst case scenario conditions. That's the benefit of having equipment rated for more than you need at the moment. Obviously you can go overboard, but having equipment that's engineered for more than you need gives you the cushion for that WORST day.
The XD or similar Class V receiver doesn't cost that much more than a Class III or Class IV receiver. The huge benefit is you have plenty of capacity and you know you'll get excellent weight distribution.
