This is very good advice. We've never worked or lived in NYC, but we have visited the city numerous times (without the camper rig; we have friends in mid-town, with safe guest parking under their condo). I've commuted from Long Island into NYC many times (I had relatives on LI), and driven into the City from the north approach. Parking about ~2 hours out of the City with the rig, and doing a rental there and back, as bob 'n dot suggest is an excellent idea.

I think I would just park in Bob's driveway and camp there for the weekend...
After a couple of margaritas Bob would drive you anywhere you want in the city!

You can google= Croton Point Park @ Westchestergov.com The park is pretty open, but does have full hook-ups. The Metro North Train Station borders the park. You can walk to it in 10-15 mins., and less than an hour into Grand Central Station if you get an express train. Check to see if you purchase a county park pass,it might be cheaper for a weeks stay,seeing it saves you $15. a day. West Point Military Academy is about 30 mi. up the river also.Car rental in town also. This park is in my backyard,PM me for local info.

The travel time is probably close to 2 hours from LI on pub transit vs less than a half hour from Jersey. Im sure that the PATH train is walking distance from the Jersey CG ,then 15-20 train ride to downtown NYC. From LI, its Lido Beach?, theres the undetermined trip to LIRR , a change in Jamaca Queens to a Penn Station train. More involved trip, more time. I live on Long Island now, and if going to NYC for a show or whatever , drive instead of training it. After the 11pm train, its hours between trains from Penn Station outbound. This only works because I have parking options not available to most.
Moral, my vote ,Jersey CG.

Although I have not done it myself , we have friends in an Airstream club that take a dozen rigs every year to Liberty Harbor CG and enjoy it . Apparently there is public transportation within walking distance to get you into the city and from there you can go almost everywhere by bus or subway . A call to the camp ground would give better info . Depending on your visiting plans you will have to decide whether staying in town or out of town is best for you . Good luck .

LOL , I worked in Manhattan for many years, I need to clarify , driving in the city isn't so bad , trying to park in the city in the city is the problem. That's why I suggested to 'turn it in' once you get there. All the rental companies have parking to drop off rental cars. Most, have them on the N.J. side to make it easier. Taxis and trains are avl. to hop into Manhattan from them.
I totally agree mass transit gets you around the city to see things.

I can't comment on camping near NYC but I would not take a car into the city. I lived on Long Island and the train / subway system was the best way to go IMO. I would find a place near mass transit and use it. Bill

Havny stayed at Liberty either but its location is very convienant to the city.

I agree its very close , about 30 mns. less of a commute than the LIDO CG but a more expensive CG. I think with the transportation added in from
lido, its probably a wash.

I have never been there ( Jersey City). I think its in the $75-80 range per night. I have no idea how safe Jersey City is, I see JC on the news often but that might in isolated areas. Im would think the CG is safe because its a flat parking lot basically that is fenced in for security. Its traveling in/out of NYC to JC on public transportation is what im not sure about . Maybe a car service or cab might be better, not sure. Im not sure if there is 24 hr security on hand to let you into the CG late at night. I don't know how that works.
