DH and I have a 26.1 Wildwood X-Lite that we just bought this spring. Our TV is a 2005 Toyota Tundra double cab with a full-sized bed(that is all I know about his truck). What are some nice campgrounds in the western part of North Carolina? We live in northeast Tennessee. DH and I are considering moving to the Carolina's and would like to spend a weekend or two in the area. That way we could combine a job/home search and camping get-a-way.

I don't know where you're wanting to be near, but Asheville East KOA and Mama Gertie's both in Swannanoa are near Asheville and I-40. Both are very nice, well-kept, and friendly. If you're wanting to be centrally located for checking out the NC mountains then that area would be ideal.

Don't know how far into the state you want to travel, but we liked Tanglewood Forsyth County park in Clemmons, NC near Winston Salem. Nice trees, reasonable rates, full hookups. Lots to do. Near shops, restaurants. Also near Asheville the KOA West in Candler seems to be the better of the KOA's. Another option. Mama Gertie's Hideaway in Swannanoa. Beautifully landscaped, clean, quiet campground with great managers. On the side of a mountain but sites are very level. Only negative is for us flatlanders it was difficult to go for a long walk and the restrooms are at the bottom of the hill. No problem for us as we used our own showers. Very convenient area.

What amenities are you looking for? There are campgrounds all the way from forest service campgrounds to tourist trap campgrounds.By western NC I assume you mean the mountains (High Country).

If just you and wife Mama Gertie's is very nice. Not much there for kids, but quiet and close to everything in Asheville.

For some reason. It is just as hot there as it is in the flatlands. Think bottom of the hill. The South West area of the mountains really doesn't cool off. You have to go up to the North West mountains before you can tell any real temp difference form the flats.

For Johnson City proximity I would recommend you look at Boone KOA, Grandfather Mountain, or for a remote forest campground, Mortimer. Mortimer is just up the road from Brown Mountain Beach but I have never stayed at Brown Mountain Beach.

Northwest NC is going to put you in Boone, Blowing Rock, Linville, and Sparta area. Lots of good CGs there. Raccoone Holler near Glendale Springs is our favorite. High enough, that even on the hottest day. You don't need AC. Boone KOA is good as well. Honey Bear just out of Boone is good, and Flintlock as well. Secluded Valley near Spruce Pines. And Toe River Campground.

Raccoone Holler is on the Blue Ridge Parkway as well, And if you want to primitive camp. Try the National Park CGs on the BRP. They are very nice, and have dump stations. Julian Price, and Linville Falls are especially good.

Checked out Mama Gerties and it looks great! Love the pictures and it is close enough for a weekend visit. It will mostly be DH, myself and our DD, is she is not working.

We would like to be less than 2 to 3 hours from Johnson City/Kingsport, TN. DH's employer is permanently shutting it's doors next week and we are going to use this time to check out new places to live and work. And we thought that staying at campgrounds would be our best option..

As far as amenities goes, we don't need a pool or playground, no grandbabies on these trips. Level lot with water and electric are the most important. WIFI would be awesome but not a necessity. We don't use cable at home and wouldn't use it camping. We both love small towns and tend to shy away from touristy places.

We visited Maggie Valley Ghost Town In the Sky a couple years ago and liked it. May have to check out the RV Resort there.

One of our favorite places is Mt Airy, NC.

Mayberry CG is a good place to stop to explore the area. We like the area so well, we took a day trip from Charlotte, NC right before project finished up and we headed elsewhere.

We are staying at the Pride RV Resort in Maggie Valley the first week in August. Its a little west of Ashville.
