Carolinas beachfront campgrounds

The OBX in early May shouldn't be very crowded.

Trees hard to find on OBX, then ask for campsite with Trees on OBX is even harder. However OBX is really nice if you have never been. I leave in a day or two for a few days down there. They have the National Park Campgrounds and then there are the commercial ones mentioned (Ocean Waves, KOA, and Camp Hatteras).

For the orginal poster saying SC was also and option you have tons of options in Myrtle Beach with the most popular being Lakewood, OceanLakes, and PirateLand, and Myrtle Beach Travel Park.

Thinking of the OBX also for an early May trip, but like mosseater, we're use to trees and elbow room (and reasonable prices). Besides, it quite a haul for us, but always wanted to go there. Please convince me!

We just came back from OBX and stayed at Hatteras. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Lets face it, it's a big, sandy parking lot with concrete pads and narrow loop roads. Luckily getting a tire off the pad while backing goes unnoticed by every one. It was tight getting in, but not too much trouble. Everyone there we came in contact with both campers and staff were very friendly. Had a great stay. Doing state parks at home exclusively, we were used to a completely different environment, ie, secluded, wooded, mountainous. We just loved the beach and surrounding area. Going back again for sure.

Huntington Beach State Park is great. Some water and electric,some FHU.Short walk to the beach. Nice nature center and activities. They have a nice store also.Be sure to visit Atalaya,the former home of the Huntington's who once owned the property. We also liked Frisco national Park Campground at the lower end of the Outer Banks. No hookups but nice location. If you have the Senior Pass it's only $13 a night. Some very nice isolated sites and depending on your site,a short walk to the beach. There is a store and gas station right outside the entrance. You are near the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and the ferry to Oracoke Island. We also enjoyed the Life Saving Museum in Rodanthe.

Camp Hatteras Resort is on both the bay & ocean side of the OBX, full resort campground with good reviews. It's $$$ but as you said your on vacation! We have stayed their twice and enjoyed both our trips. Love the geography of the area, seeing those towering dunes going down both sides of state road 12.

Take a look at Edisto Beach State Park, Huntington Beach State Park, or even Myrtle Beach State Park. There are also several commercial parks near MBSP that many people rave about. All these are good. Wife and I stayed at koa cape hatteras last thanksgiving. The nc outer banks has huge sandunes but we could hear the ocean waves from our back in site at the foot of the dunes.

Several choices in Myrtle Beach

We are going to Camp Hatteras next August for our longer distance group trip. Camp Hatteras goes right to the inland side of the dunes... as close to the beach as you can get in North Carolina.

We used to go to Topsail Island, NC with the family. There is Surf City Family Campground on the beach there, but from what I remember the sites were TIGHT and it was a little run down. Haven't been to that area in 8 or 9 years though.
