From the General rules link on recreation.gov
The number of camping units per campsite varies and is set locally.
So, again, a phone call would have avoided the situation. My assumption has always been one per campsite. If I was in a situation to need two, I would most certainly call.

Thank You!!!! Finally after 50+ posts you found it on their website!! I owe you a beer.
The reality is, most National Parks are not reservationable by Recreation.gov. Many of them are first come first serve. I have no knowledge of the Campsite that is being referenced in this post whether it is or not.
Also, one thing that I would add that has not been added. When you have a new neighbor move in, you expect a car or two from the framily that lives in the home. When that family then rents out their home and they have multiple roommates and that becomes extra cars parked wherever they can. This is when it becomes a quality of life issue. That is why communities have zone and covenant rules. To minimize the impact on others. Sort of spread it out, the density of people. If one were to stack in the RVs, it would turn into what one normally sees in a RV PARK. RVs parked lined up like cars in a parking lot. While I don't have a problem with utilising space available, I do have a problem with a site next to me (when I was expecting otherwise) to be bulging at the seams.
Then you have the rule at a Tents only campground and the staff is met with the question everyday; "Can I just sleep in my Car/Truck Camper/Truck under the topper?"
Response: "Uh, no."
Question: "Well all those other cars and trucks are parking there next to the the tents. How about if I just park my car and or truck too and just not set up a tent?"
Another reason I would never be a Camp Ground Host . . .
